CEO Message
Within the pharmaceutical
industry, various hurdles have emerged that increase both the time
and cost of drug development. Over the past decade R&D expenditure
in the pharmaceutical industry has more than doubled whilst the
number of new drugs being submitted for regulatory approval has
more than halved.
It is clear that the rising cost of clinical trials is one major
reason for the increasing cost of drug development. More precisely
it is the expense of unsuccessful trials that is causing the bulk
of this cost escalation.
New technologies, such as genomics, whilst being successfully applied
in drug discovery, have yet to be fully utilized in directing clinical
development to reduce this failure rate. Thus, even with today’s
technologies, only one in ten drugs that enter clinical development
actually reaches the market. So serious is this problem that the
US Food & Drug Administration has recently provided guidance
to the industry. One of its main conclusions was that “The
new science is not being used to guide the development process in
the same way that it is accelerating the discovery process. A new
product development toolkit is urgently needed to improve predictability
and efficiency along the critical path (of clinical development).”
This is precisely where Cytomyx fits in. Cytomyx LLC, based
in Lexington, USA has created one of the largest collections of
highly characterized human tissue samples in the world. We have
over 140,000 biological specimens spanning a wide range of human
diseases that are used by our clients to link genetic information
to human disease. Our samples are widely used by most of the world’s
leading pharmaceutical companies to identify new drug targets and
to shed light on which groups of patients will be able to benefit
from new drug therapies that they are developing.
With the ever-increasing understanding of human genetics and the
drive towards ‘personalized medicine’, Cytomyx aims
to become a key partner for our clients in the years to come. we
look forward to working with you.
